Celebrating Achievements – outside of work!

As hard as we all work, I think it’s important to take time to celebrate important achievements that happen in our personal lives to remind us why we do this. On that note, I can’t contain my excitement and pride for my daughter, Sophia-Ray who is achieving incredible things at the age of 15. This month, she's representing our country in the prestigious Nation's Cup, an international Theater on Ice (TOI) figure skating competition that beautifully combines the elegance of figure skating with the artistry of theater and dance.

Sophia-Ray is an integral member of the Encore of Boston novice team, a group of immensely successful skaters who have consistently excelled at the regional, sectional, and national levels. They bring honor to the renowned Skating Club of Boston. And here's the best part: Encore has been chosen by the U.S. Figure Skating Theatrical Skating Committee to compete and defend their well-deserved World Championship title in Bordeaux, France!

Sophia-Ray's achievements go beyond her athletic and artistic talents as she's made incredible sacrifices to pursue her skating dreams. She balances the significant physical demands, grueling practice sessions, academic commitments at a rigorous college preparatory school, and she continues to shine. She even finds time for friendships, hobbies, and other interests outside of skating!

Sophia-Ray's dedication and perseverance are truly inspiring, and I couldn't be prouder of her exceptional accomplishments. As she and her teammates embark on this thrilling journey, competing on the grand stage in France, I'll be cheering them on from the sidelines with unwavering support and admiration.

    Encore Proud! Go USA!

Women's History Month - TCMG honors Constance Wilson

Reflecting on Women's History Month, its significance holds a deep personal meaning for TCMG founder, Nicole Richer this year. Though it's a few weeks late, it's never too late to appreciate the remarkable achievements of women leaders, activists, and role models who have contributed immensely to society, past and present. Nicole shares her thoughts with us about her mother below:

One woman whose impact on my life is indelible is my late mother, Constance A. Wilson. Her sudden passing in March was a devastating loss that prompted profound reflection. As I think about her life and the influence she had on me, I'm reminded of the invaluable lessons she taught and the lasting impression she left on my heart.

My mother was a force to be reckoned with—a woman of unwavering strength, resilience, and compassion, and the backbone of our family. As a woman of color born in the silent generation, she emphasized the importance of education and living in a diverse society. She encouraged me to challenge societal expectations, break down gender norms and barriers, and pursue my goals beyond the constraints of the glass ceiling. Her determination and relentless pursuit of her dreams continue to inspire me to believe in my capabilities, embrace a strong work ethic, and strive for excellence.

As I journey through life, I carry my mother's legacy with me, with the hope of passing it down to my daughters. Women's History Month serves as a powerful reminder of the countless women, like my mother, who have shaped our world through their courage, resilience, and unwavering spirit.

Join TCMG in celebrating and sharing their stories not just for a month, but every day of the year.

Second Phase of the Construction Mentor Program (CMP)

Exciting news! TCMG has successfully launched the second Phase of the Construction Mentor Program (CMP) on the Enterprise Research Campus project, providing students with an incredible job shadowing experience. TCMG is honored to have Harvard Allston Land Company as our program sponsor, and we are grateful to the joint venture construction management team of Turner Janey and J&J for serving as site program mentors.

During this phase of the CMP program, students gain authentic real-world job experiences by job shadowing industry practitioners, learning from them, and adhering to professional expectations and site standards. Students also have the valuable opportunity to shadow three different site trade contractors: State Electric, Lund Rebar, and Turner's Self-Perform Operations. Our mentors play a critical role in guiding students on their career exploration and readiness journey. They empower students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for their personal and career development.

To ensure a real-world experience, students are expected to independently arrive at the project site by 7 AM, ready to work regardless of the weather conditions. Recently, they faced freezing temperatures, teaching them important lessons about dressing appropriately for cold weather.

TCMG, along with our partners, are dedicated to preparing the next generation of skilled workers. Through mentoring, we strive to create a stronger and more diverse AEC industry. Stay tuned for more updates on our monthly Construction Mentor Program. Together, we are actively shaping the future of our industry! Attention AEC Industry Practitioners & Companies!

We urgently need more COOP and internship opportunities for vocational trade high school students in the AEC industry! These programs are crucial for preparing the next generation of skilled professionals and bridging the workforce gap in the trades. By offering hands-on experiences, we help students apply shop knowledge, develop skills, and gain a realistic understanding of industry expectations, all while setting them up for success in the workforce after graduation.

HERE’S THE CATCH: high school opportunities are often overlooked, with more focus on post-secondary COOPs. We need to change that! By actively engaging and collaborating with vocational trade high schools, we can inspire students to pursue long-term careers in the trades. Let's provide them with exposure, support, and guidance to thrive in the AEC industry.

HOW TO HELP? Reach out to vocational teachers and COOP coordinators to inquire about how you can help and overcome barriers. Alternatively, contact TCMG. We work with many vocational schools facilitating connections between companies and schools, and we’d like to invite potential industry partners to visit vocational school shops to see projects that students are working on.

Roan Kennedy, a student from the Construction Craft Laborers program at Medford Vocational Technical High School, shares their COOP experience and says, "The COOP experience has been life-changing for me. It has allowed me to apply what I've learned in school to real-world construction projects. I've gained invaluable hands-on experience and developed practical skills that will benefit my future career.”

Let's make a difference and mentor a stronger, more diverse AEC industry!

Attention AEC Industry Practitioners & Companies!

    Linking Construction

    The Construction Mentor Program

Back to School means back to Construction Mentoring!

TCMG is kicking off another year of our Construction Mentor Program (CMP) in partnership with the Harvard Allston Land Company, Tishman Speyer, the project hosts and developers. We provide students from partnering schools with a unique opportunity to connect with industry companies and practitioners actively involved in Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus project. The program aims to educate students about AEC careers and pathways while offering valuable insights and mentorship experiences. TCMG is particularly thrilled that Turner Construction, responsible for constructing the laboratory and office building, will actively participate in the program, providing students with valuable guidance and mentorship.

It's inspiring that recent CMP alumnus Alexander Rosen, Evan Ford, Khadijah Asamoah, and Saniah Mahmud, who are recent graduates from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, have all chosen to pursue post-secondary pathways in the AEC industry. Evan's acceptance into the North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Fund, Khadijah's participation in the Harvard Careers in Construction Program, Saniah's studies in Construction Management at UMASS Amherst, and Alexander's pursuit of Architecture after interning with Turner Construction are all remarkable success stories. TCMG aims to continue inspiring the next generation of AEC talent this year and beyond. Breaking Industry Barriers for Underrepresented Business Enterprises (UBEs) in the AEC!

Diversity, inclusion, and equity are gaining recognition as vital components within the AEC industry. Diverse perspectives drive innovation and enhance problem-solving, shaping a better world for us all. However, finding, and engaging UBEs remains a challenge for many companies.

Traditional methods like online directories, UBE databases, and mass email blasts often yield limited responses. This is especially true for small to mid-size UBEs that may lack the resources to participate in blind bid requests without a guarantee of winning the project.

That's where TCMG comes in! We offer a targeted and strategic approach to engage, build trust, and sustain connections with UBEs. We understand the importance of providing reassurance and acknowledging the labor-intensive nature of formal UBE certification programs, which may discourage eligible companies from participating.

At TCMG, we see this challenge as an opportunity to break industry barriers for UBEs, prime contractors, and other AEC businesses. Our expertise lies in connecting companies and building trust through transparent processes that identify qualified UBEs for exciting project opportunities. TCMG is currently working with our friends at Suffolk Construction on project specific DEI planning and workforce compliance management.

Let's bridge the gap, foster collaboration, and unlock the full potential of Underrepresented Business Enterprises together. Be sure to check out these UBE’s when you are searching for teaming partners on your projects or contact TCMG and we can help connect you to Vobecky Enterprises, Laboratory Design and Supply, Capital City Construction & Management Services, Cost and Harbor Associates, Emmaty Inc, The Vann Organization, Mountain Consulting, TruEdge Solutions, Anvil Steel Engineering, Island Pavement Cutting Co, New England Foundation Co., H&A Steel LLC, LASA & AAF, New Form Building Systems Inc, Coastal Construction & Management Co, Westview Building Company, Chase Landscape, KT&T Distributors, Mass Signal Service LLC, Outkast Electrical Contractors, Pulpit Hill Supply, Industry Solutions, Synergy Contracting, Heroica Construction, Prescott Property Preservation LLC, DePaoli Mosaic Company, DWC Designs, CAAN Fence, cKm Construction LLC, Ocean State Signal Co.

    TCMG Walk-On Applicant Process

Have you encountered challenges in managing your Walk-On Applicant process?

Have you struggled finding community applicants for your construction job site?

TCMG has revolutionized the process by automating application intake, implementing strategic community-based campaigns, and optimizing employment match opportunities, starting with localized talent engagement efforts to attract candidates to the project site. With the use of QR Code technology, walk-on candidates can effortlessly create personalized digital profiles showcasing their qualifications and work experience, which are then distributed to project contractors based on their respective trade crafts. This streamlined process simplifies workflows, enables efficient tracking and documentation of outreach efforts, and enhances the ability to identify qualified applicants, fostering successful employment matches between local walk-on candidates and contractors. You can see an example of a Walk-On Applicant Profile in this picture. It's a win-win situation for all involved!

TCMG is currently working with Bond Building, Suffolk Construction, Jumbo Capital and Surus Development & Construction on various Walk-On Applicant management processes. Are you having trouble with workforce compliance on your construction projects?

TCMG is at the forefront of innovating processes to support workforce compliance. While watching the construction industry struggle in this area, TCMG has developed and launched a new cloud-based software platform for the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry. This new easy-to-use compliance software streamlines once separate processes including certified payroll reporting, prevailing wage auditing, best faith effort reporting, walk-on log management, and supply diversity engagement into one source. TCMG provides a comprehensive suite of tools that helps organizations stay compliant with industry regulations, track their workforce, and improves overall performance for both emerging and established businesses. TCMG is currently providing compliance management for Suffolk Construction on the MBTA Quincy Bus Maintenance Facility Project and for BOND Building on the William E. Carter School Project.

TCMG – President and Founder Spotlight, Nicole Richer

Nicole Richer is a prominent name in the New England construction community. She started her career at William A. Berry/Suffolk Construction, where she held various positions, including project coordinator, field engineer, owner's representative, and project manager. She played a significant role in several notable projects, such as the Governor's Academy, Harvard University's Center for Government and International Studies, Partners HealthCare, Boston Medical Center, and Whittier Street Healthcare projects. Nicole gained a comprehensive understanding of construction operations from both field and project management perspectives. Nicole also found a passion for her work, but the road to professional acceptance and opportunity was challenging, and at times lonely, being the only female and person of color on many of her project teams.

This inspired her to help others struggling to find their place in the design and construction world. With a desire to give back and promote diversity and inclusion in the industry, she started her own firm, The Compliance Mentor Group (TCMG), in 2012.

Nicole Richer faced significant challenges in finding her way into the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, despite attending a STEM high school and having a passion for architectural design, plan reading, and organization. She received little guidance or information in high school about post-secondary programs or career pathways in design and construction, which made it challenging for her to pursue her interests.

Despite these early challenges, Nicole persevered and gained valuable knowledge and experience in the AEC industry through hard work and the guidance of great industry mentors. However, she believes that if she had received more mentoring and career exploration opportunities in high school, her college choice and early professional years could have been more productive, and her journey into the AEC industry more direct.

Nicole's personal experiences have given her a unique perspective on the importance of mentorship and support for underrepresented groups. She is committed to developing and facilitating workforce programming that provides career exploration opportunities, job shadowing experiences, and formalized mentoring relationships, particularly to those without existing industry networks. These initiatives help others overcome barriers to success in the industry and show AEC industry partners the way to Mentor for a Stronger, More Diverse Workforce.® Nicole's work through The Compliance Mentor Group is helping to create a more diverse and inclusive AEC industry, where individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to build successful careers and contribute to industry innovation and progress. Her work is helping to break down systemic barriers to entry and advancement in the industry and create a more equitable future for all who aspire to work in the AEC.

“Starting TCMG was a dream of mine”, says Nicole, “I am passionate about mentoring other women, people of color, small businesses, and those with less resources in general, so they can have the opportunity to be just as successful as anyone else. TCMG is doing just that with the amazing partners that have hired us to assist with similar goals, as well as the students we’ve reached, it has been such a rewarding part of starting the company.” Nicole and TCMG have developed and successfully completed workforce development programming and compliance services on some of the most notable construction projects in the Boston area working with real estate developers, construction firms, educational institutions, and municipalities. TCMG is not only connecting AEC industry firms with local communities and schools to promote mentorship, but they are also on the front line helping to support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Construction.

TCMG is at the forefront of innovating processes to support workforce compliance. While watching the construction industry struggle in this area, in 2020 TCMG launched a new cloud base software platform for the AEC industry offering more efficient business and compliance workforce solutions. This new compliance software streamlines once-separated processes including certified payroll reporting, prevailing wage auditing, best faith effort reporting, walk-on log management, and supply diversity engagement into one source.

If you work in the AEC industry and haven’t met Nicole Richer or worked with TCMG, you should! Be sure to send Nicole a note to see how your firm could benefit from participating in a mentor program or compliance management services. She’d love to chat with you!

HALC/Tishman Speyer Construction Mentor Program Sponsor

TCMG is excited to announce we will be partnering, once again, with the Harvard Allston Land Company (HALC) during the 2023-2024 academic year to facilitate a Construction Mentor Program (CMP). The CMP is a workforce and career development program primarily targeting underrepresented youth and young adults who reside in low-income communities and identify as BIPOC, first-generation immigrants, or English learners, and are interested in pursuing careers in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. This next CMP will be in collaboration with HALC's preferred developer, Tishman Speyer and their affiliated construction management teams.

During the vertical construction of the Enterprise Research Campus (ERC) project, TCMG will work with HALC and Tishman Speyer to deploy the CMP. Through group learning, job-shadowing, and mentoring experiences, students will have the opportunity to establish industry networking connections, hone workforce readiness skills, and discover careers within the high-performance design field.

By providing access to industry exposure and mentorship, the CMP aims to create scalable and sustainable workforce business solutions that maximize diversity and inclusion efforts while directly contributing to the projects' workforce. We believe that this program will have a positive impact on the lives of participants and the AEC industry. Boston Properties New Workforce Development Program

TCMG is thrilled to partner with BXP Boston Properties to launch a new and innovative workforce development program for high school students. Our program will focus on high-performance design and careers in the built environment, with a special emphasis on the construction of the BXP Life Sciences Center in Kendall Square.

Through monthly field trips, students can meet industry practitioners working on the BXP Life Sciences Center project. They'll learn about the project's various components, including a new underground electrical substation from energy provider Eversource, residential housing, commercial laboratory, office, retail space, and public open space.

Our goal is that this program will inspire more young people to pursue careers in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Creating programs to connect and support our next generation of builders and designers allows these students to be equipped to serve our local communities and shape the future of our built environment. The Compliance Mentor Group (TCMG) with the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) recently completed their first, year-long career exploratory program, called Building Energy Scholar Team (BEST). This initial BEST program collaboration was funded through the EmPower Massachusetts grant to create and support the implementation of innovative projects, through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Technology Center (MassCEC).

TCMG/NESEA’s BEST program used the funding and hosted learning sessions to connect and expose students from over 20 Boston-based vocational high schools that predominantly serve Environmental Justice communities (minority, low income, and English isolation) with leading businesses and practitioners to building design, engineering, and construction trades. Nicole Richer, Founder and President of TCMG, says this inaugural BEST program reached over 30 students exploring sustainable energy careers. Please be sure to watch the video to get a closer look at the program and our students experience.
